From My Backyard to My First Art Show

My friend Lynda was actually the one who convinced me to do my first art show.

At the time, I was just making sculptures because I loved doing it. My backyard was slowly filling up, and Lynda kept telling me I should try selling them.

I wasn't convinced. I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in what I was making.

Lynda was convinced enough for both of us.

I Had No Idea What to Expect

Eventually, she talked me into doing a show in Fountain Hills. So I packed up my sculptures and went.

I had absolutely no idea what to expect. This was the first time I had put my work out in front of people who weren't friends or family. 

And then people stopped.

They looked. They asked questions. They wanted to know what the sculptures were made from, where the pieces came from, and how I had put them together.

And then they started buying them.

By the end of that first show, 14 sculptures had found new homes.

I had gone in wondering whether anyone would want what I was making.

I left thinking: maybe there is actually something here.

What Came Next

That weekend changed the way I looked at what I was doing.

What had started with a welding class, a welder in my garage, and a few sculptures I wanted to make for my own backyard suddenly felt like it could become something more.

That was the beginning of Metal Morph.

And yes, Lynda still gets to say, "I told you so."
